Artifact 2: SIOP Lesson Plan

I created and later taught this lesson plan, which contains all eight components of Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), during Summer Semester 2011 at Dixie State College.  This artifact provides evidence of Diversity (DM1), because it demonstrates my ability to use my school and classroom contextual factors to create differentiated instruction in order to fit the needs of the students in my class.  It also demonstrates my ability to create a SIOP lesson plan for English Language Learners (ELL's).  For example, this lesson not only includes all eight components of SIOP, it also incorporates various hands-on activities, as well as visuals, into a well designed lesson plan.  Throughout this lesson students will be given ample opportunities to explore new vocabulary, and to learn about and understand the science concept of Matter from the Utah  5th Grade Science Core Curriculum, Standard 1, Objective 1: Describe that matter can neither be created nor destroyed even though it may undergo change.
